Interprofessional Education and Collaboration (IPEC)
The School of Health Sciences at Humber College is actively involved in pursuing interprofessional education and collaboration with our students, faculty, and community partners. A number of initiatives have made it possible for our growing involvement in IPEC including financial support from the Interprofessional Infrastructure Fund (Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care and the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities), the establishment of the Office of Scholarship and Interprofessional Education, and the growing involvement of students, faculty, and community partners.

Other IPEC Activities
Stilwell, Ontario
On May 6, 2010, Stilwell, Ontario was officially launched at an event attended by faculty and community partners. In collaboration with Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, ORNGE, and McMaster University, the School of Health Sciences has developed the Virtual Learning Community of Stilwell. Adapted from a project developed at the University of Cumbria, UK, Stilwell is designed to represent a typical Canadian neighbourhood with a wide demographic mix. Learners from different disciplines discover the stories of the residents of Stilwell and work through their cases to respond to health related issues and to create dialogue around the roles and responsibilities of providers. The stories of the residents are brought to life with the aid of a wide range of multimedia. This project is funded by HealthForceOntario. For more information about Stilwell, Ontario, click here.
IPE Clinical Placements with West Park Healthcare Centre
The School of Health Sciences is embarking on Interprofessional (IP) Clinical Placements. Run in partnership with West Park Healthcare Centre, the first IP placement saw four Bachelor of Nursing Degree students, four Practical Nursing Diploma students, and two Occupational Therapist Assistant & Physiotherapist Assistant Diploma students working collaboratively in the musculoskeletal unit at West Park. Students had the opportunity to participate in an IP orientation session, bi-weekly post conferences, and the placement culminated in a presentation by the students of their experiences. A study on students’ knowledge and attitudes towards IPE is also being conducted in conjunction with this placement.
Interprofessional Collaboration Workshop
With grant funding from HealthForceOntario, a full-day IPE workshop was held for community partners for the second year in a row. Entitled “Learning to Be You and Me: Teams in the 21st Century,” the workshop took place March 24, 2010 at the Old Mill Inn in Toronto. Over 75 participants representing 19 organizations had the opportunity to hear guest speakers and to take part in interactive activities. Feedback from participants has been overwhelmingly positive with many individuals expressing that the workshop was very effective. Presentations from the workshop are now online. IPE Workshop for Students
Faculty are actively working on strategies to implement IPEC in the School. One project that began in 2007-8 was led by Professor Margot Rykhoff in the Humber-UNB Bachelor of Nursing program. Supported by faculty from participating programs, Margot led a project to bring students from four health sciences programs together for a one-day IPEC table top exercise using a client case study. The student evaluation of the experience (in which over 150 students participated as an extramural activity) was overwhelmingly positive. Programs involved included nursing, practical nursing, paramedic, and OTA & PTA.
Based on the student feedback from this session, an introductory session on Interprofessional Education was provided to 250 first year students and some 2nd year students from six Health Science Programs including nursing, practical nursing, paramedic, OTA & PTA, Pharmacy Technician, and Personal Support Worker in 2007-8. Class visits from professors in other programs provided the Introductory IPE Session for each of these classes.
Since the Fall of 2009, the introductory session on Interprofessional Education is provided in the 1st year, 1st term to all of the SHS programs, and to Exercise Science & Lifestyle Management and Social Service Worker students. During the year (2009-10), the 3rd annual large group activity, which took place in March, involved over 300 students from ten (10) programs, involving degree nursing, practical nursing, paramedic, and OTA & PTA for the 3rd year; and pharmacy technician, personal support worker, exercise science and social work diploma students for the 2nd year and expanded to Early Childhood Education and Funeral Service students. Students had the opportunity to hear a guest speaker, see creative arts students’ role playing the characters in the case study, and participate in small group discussion in interprofessional teams to work collaboratively on the case study. During the year (2010-11), the 4th annual IPE workshop took place in March, involved over 330 students from the ten (10) programs and continues to be evaluated by both the students and faculty facilitators as an overwhelmingly positive experience.
Virtual Scholar in Residence Program

To support faculty development, we have created a Virtual Scholar in Residence Program. Virtual Scholars are present on campus once each academic term and are available for faculty consultation between visits via telephone and/or email.
For 2009-10, our Virtual Scholar is Dr. Scott Reeves. Dr Scott Reeves is the Director of Research, Centre for Faculty Development, St. Michael's Hospital; a Scientist, Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute of St Michael's Hospital; a Scientist, Wilson Centre for Research in Education, University Health Network and an Associate Professor, Department of Psychiatry, University of Toronto. He is a social scientist who has been undertaking health professions education and health services research for nearly fifteen years. As a recognition of his scholarship in the interprofessional field, he was recently appointed as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Interprofessional Care.
Intraprofessional Leadership
Students in the Bachelor of Nursing Degree program and Practical Nursing Diploma program now have the opportunity to learn with, from, and about each other thanks to the collaboration of two School of Health Sciences faculty members. Together, Jennie Miron and Sandra Cop developed a Nursing Leadership course that has students from both programs learn together in the same classroom. From the initial class of 80 students, the Intraprofessional Leadership course has grown to 160 students in four classes in the Winter 2010 term.
